You may want to ensure the Spelling & Grammar check is turned on. There is an additional setting to adjust to make sure that words type in UPPERCASE are not ignored.
By default, Outlook will display the number of UNREAD items in all folders. You can change the properties of the folder to display the TOTAL number of items in the folder. This will work in Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, and Outlook 2010.
