If you receive a text message or e-mail with a reference to a date or time (or both), the iPad/iPhone converts them to a link that you can tap to create an event on your calendar. This process is shown on iPhone with iOS 8, but works the same on iPad and iOS 9 & 10 as well. The same link will be created if this was in a text message as well.
