Mobile Technology Devices – “Know the Role” 1-Desktop Computers

In establishing a firm foundation with the technology you are going to use every day, we recommend that you strongly consider a mindset that enables you to maximize your productivity no matter what device you are using:

  • Desktop (NO)
  • Laptop/Hybrid
  • Smartphone (only one, if at all possible)
  • Tablet
  • …what’s next?

Let’s start today with the value proposition of a desktop computer for many (but not all) business professionals, it’s efficiency is quite limited:

  • Many of its settings for programs and views do not carry over to any other devices (at this time in technology development)
  • Files that you place on your desktop computer’s “desktop” are not normally accessible on your mobile device (s)
  • Logging into a desktop computer is much slower and not as reliable as having your computer right in front of you

All things considered, I usually recommend upgrading to a new laptop/hybrid (meaning laptop/tablet combination, like the Microsoft Surface Pro) with a docking station. That most likely will include for most professionals a larger monitor(s) and an external keyboard for the office location(s) you regularly work from. You can repurpose your old desktop to someone who never works remotely or donates its charity. Either way, make sure you wipe your data off it first.
